Oldschoolfic "Spring Serenade" Ficathon
I'm thinking of signing up for oldschoolfic, the ficathon for canceled series, even though it's due on the same day as rarewomen, for which I'm already signed up.  (Usually, I offer 10+ fandoms in this game; I'd offer just 4 this time. And I'd write nearer the minimum 1K words than usual!)  If I should reconsider, please tap my shoulder and remind me of sensibleness...?

oldschoolfic sign-ups close on Wednesday 02/29; stories are due 04/30.  Players submit three prompts, usually two from two listed fandoms and a third from any canceled fandom ("wildcard"), but the rules also permit multiple prompts in a single listed fandom.  Listed fandoms:

Angel, the Series
Babylon 5
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Battlestar Galactica (1978, original)
Forever Knight
Sarah Connor Chronicles

The listed fandoms have actually been written in past oldschoolfic games, plus some other criteria known only to the moderator.  (Last time, there was voting, but non-players completely overwhelmed the poll and then didn't come back to write in the fandoms for which they voted, pushing out some people who had wanted to play.)

The game twist this time is that in addition to another player's direct prompt, each writer also receives a third player's random song-lyric prompt.  As always, this game's minimum 1K words may be a single story, or two 500-word stories, or ten 100-word stories, etc.

Are any of you playing?  Considering playing?

I think you should go for it! You can do it!

I've even signed up for multiple ficathons that are due around the same time. At least it will keep us busy, and writing is always one of the best pastimes. =)

Thanks for the positive wishes! I'm a little concerned about making myself too busy with this hobby, when I should be busy with other things... we'll see! :-)

Promoting Oldschoolfic
The Oldschoolfic mod just posted that sign-ups are so few that she might have to cancel the game. As XF is among their listed fandoms, as well as FK, might you be considering playing yourself, or do you happen to know someone who might like to but perhaps hasn't yet heard about the game?

:-) Just spreading the word. :-)

I'll take a look at the criteria, rules, etc. =)

Re: Promoting Oldschoolfic
Thank you for considering it! :-)

I submitted my prompts yesterday. Of course they're all FK since that's the only fandom I can write. It would be great to have you on board, too.

"Cuts Deep"
Thank you for the positive wish; I appreciate it. I hope that you have a lot of fun in the game!

I believe that players may request up to three different fandoms, regardless of how many fandoms they are able to write. However, I know that you prefer to read only FK fanfic. :-)

May I be very, very frank? As you know, I received your prompts in the last Oldschoolfic game. I regret not choosing your HL prompt instead of your FK prompt. I worry about getting matched with your three FK prompts in this small game, or anyone else's "dark" preferences.

"Dark" FK preferences overwhelm me. I tried hard last time, but the story never came together to satisfy either side. It took too much time; it exhausted me. And then a real-life acquaintance came across it, and was taken aback, aghast, at the "dark" content, and refuses to believe that most of my fanfic is not like that, nor to read anything I write ever again.

I can't do "dark."

Re: "Cuts Deep"
Oh dear, now I feel horrible for being the cause that your acquaintance reacted that way.

If it's any consolation, in this round I have a gen prompt that doesn't require "dark" at all. Of course I've listed "dark" among the preferences, but I don't mind if that part is skipped, especially when it makes you uncomfortable. I won't appreciate your work any less. They are preferences, not orders. I see it the same way the moderator explained about the song lyrics: They can be incorporated into the story as inspiration, but they don't need to be. I'd rather have a light story than no story at all.

It's different with the list of "things I'd prefer not reading". As usual, Ive listed "rape" and "graphic violence" among these and I would be upset if those requests were disregarded.

As for your chance to be matched with someone else's dark preferences, I'd say if there's someone else out there with my weird taste, it's more likely that this person will be matched with me instead of you.:)

Please don't let my preferences keep you from participating in this game. My list of preferences also contains "plot" and "witty dialogue", and I'd be perfectly happy if you stick with those instead of incorporating all I've listed into the story in case you end up with my prompts again.

Re: "Cuts Deep"
Oh, please no, don't feel bad! It was my labored execution, plus poor luck, not your request. (I had persuaded this acquaintance and his wife to watch first-season FK. They liked it and asked after my fanfic. I sent the link, saying that of the many diverse stories written over many years, they should pick one that sounded appealing to them. Instead, he picked the one that happened to be my most recent story at that time, "Cuts Deep," which did not appeal to him at all.)

>"I'd say if there's someone else out there with my ... taste, it's more likely that this person will be matched with me instead of you.:)"

A very good point! :-)

I just saw Lara post that only two people are signed up at this time. That's pretty dire. Whether or not I play, I do hope that more people in general will play!

Aw, c'mon. You know you wanna....
Amy R.: Gracebrightknightie on February 26th, 2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
;-) Ah, but what I want is not always what I should get. ;-) Thanks for the fun nudge! I'm still pondering.

Promoting Oldschoolfic
As you may have seen, the Oldschoolfic mod has posted that sign-ups are so low that she might have to cancel the game. Are you perhaps one of those few sign-ups, or might you be thinking about becoming one, or do you happen to know someone who might love one of the listed fandoms but hasn't yet heard of the game?

Just advertising a little. ;-)

Re: Promoting Oldschoolfic
I hadn't seen that, but I am signed up. I don't really have any place to advertise, though....

Re: Promoting Oldschoolfic
Just mention it on your journal for your f-list to see? (Please forgive me if I've missed you already doing that!)

I'll post about the ficathon again briefly tomorrow; I suspect that more people read LJ on weekdays from their work computers than on weekends from home.

I'll probably sign up (willing to write FK, HL, YB and BSG'78), but I am holding out a bit still...

This sounds very interesting but I am a big chicken when it comes to having to sign up for this sort of thing. I am always afraid I will not finish it in time and I would hate to sign up for something and have people counting on me only to have to disappoint them.

I did finish a story for the comm older_not_dead promptathon the way they do it is everyone submits prompts and then for the next month you can submit stories. Very little pressure. That way if you can't finish then no worries! I was inspired late in the game so I have barely finished it in time and will post in the next few days.

If you do decided to participate, I can't wait to read it! Sorry for rambling! Happy Writing!

so many kinds of games
It's delightful that there are so many different kinds of fiction games available these days, for all the different temperaments and preferences. :-) Good luck with your older_not_dead contribution!
