What is a prompt?

  • Nov. 18th, 2009 at 1:30 AM
My apologies to anyone I confused with my previous post!  I do plan a "Ficathons 101" for [info]fkficfest; please consider this an installment on that future orientation.

What is a ficathon?  A ficathon (or fest) is a game in which people write stories, usually with some common element (e.g. fandom).  common types )

What is a prompt?  A prompt is a seed for a story.  It is the request that the writer fulfills.  Four examples:  2 by Me, 2 by You )

Oldschoolfic Sign-Ups Due 11/15

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 12:06 AM
So I've signed up for [info]oldschoolfic's December exchange (rules/sign-ups; sign-up deadline is November 15; minimum 500 words).  As usual, I asked for Forever Knight, Highlander or Young Blades.  I offered those plus Rurouni Kenshin, Monarch of the Glen and Original Battlestar Galactica.  I didn't offer any Buffyverse, Trek or other things this time; I hope my very short list doesn't make it difficult for the mod... but I would have restricted it to just FK, HL and YB, if that hadn't seemed very much too greedy.

I hope that all of you who are playing Yuletide are receiving inspiring prompts this weekend, and that those of you running with NaNoWriMo are surpassing all your goals!  Good luck and great fun, all around.

Yuletide sign-ups are open (this is the annual ficathon exchange for obscure fandoms).  At this time, six people have requested FK stories, and twelve people have offered to write FK stories.  Sign-ups must be submitted by 11/12; stories are due on 12/21.  This is the biggest fanfiction game of which I know, and this is its seventh year.  I know some of you are playing it; please include FK, yeah?

I will not be playing Yuletide myself, but I will be playing [info]oldschoolfic (for canceled fandoms).  Sign-ups are due by 11/15; stories are due on 12/25.  I need to work out what stories to request and which fandoms to offer (as I can't under the rules say "FK or HL only" ~g~).

Separately, [info]gen_ficathon is taking a poll about holding a second round.  In my opinion, when considering future participation, it is relevant to note that the first round of this exchange ficathon had some challenges, including four writers who never received stories, and three months to release the stories that were submitted.  I would personally like to see a plan to address these issues before committing to another round.

Oldschoolfic Decemberfest Ficathon

  • Nov. 3rd, 2009 at 10:22 PM
Tuesday morning, [info]oldschoolfic (the ficathon for canceled series) announced a December story-exchange event.  FK is eligible!  (So is HL.)  Sign-ups are open here now through Sunday, November 15.  Stories are due no later than Friday, December 25.

(On that schedule, I likely shouldn't play.  I don't get many hours outside work; something due after the two three-day weekends at the end of the year would be much better for me -- know of any?  But I admit I'm thinking about it.)

Addendum 11/05:  Yeah, yeah... I'm definitely going to play in the [info]oldschoolfic event.  It's only a question of which prompts to submit and in which fandoms to volunteer.

In Ficathon News

  • Oct. 23rd, 2009 at 8:35 AM
The story written for one of my prompts in [info]gen_ficathon turned up this week (the author generously picked it up as a pinch-hitter after someone else defaulted).  This is the ficathon for celebrating fanfiction beyond romance.  Titled "Hero," by [info]alexajohnson, it's for my Star Trek '09 prompt.  The other prompts I submitted in that event were Forever Knight (of course), Highlander, Young Blades, and Star Trek: The Next Generation -- highest number of prompts requested/allowed in any ficathon I've played in yet.

Speaking of ficathons, [info]oldschoolfic is running a poll about holding a "December Carnival" all-holiday exchange event.  This is the ficathon for celebrating out-of-production fandoms.  They're guaging interest, dates, and preferred minimum length, to start.  If you're interested, please drop by.  (If FK is eligible this time, and if I think I have good odds of getting an FK or HL asignment, and if Real Life keeps itself to itself, I plan to play.  A lot of "if"s, I know -- but three Buffyverse assignments in a row this year!  I'm fond of the Buffyverse, but I've got to come home to my own fandoms to recharge my hobby.)

Still speaking of ficathons, [info]fkficfest is up.  It's not quite ready for members, insofar as we have some testing yet to do with posting from different accounts, and holding and releasing a queue -- I've never modded a community before -- and you don't need to live through that on your Friends List/Reading Page.  But if you're interested in taking a look, please let me (or co-mod [info]amilyn) know what you think.  We plan for sign-ups to begin in February, and stories to release in May.

I've been out of touch.  I'll catch up this weekend!

Ficathons Update

  • Sep. 7th, 2009 at 5:00 PM
The Fall 2009 [info]oldschoolfic fest (the one for canceled series) released this weekend, with a total of eight stories in six fandoms.  One of them, "The Fall Rolled in on the Back of Summer" by [info]abby82, is FK!  Written for a prompt by me!  (My entry, "What Remains has Always Been," was written for a BtVS request.)

The inaugural [info]gen_ficathon fest (the one for other-than-romance) is still waiting for the final entries to be submitted.  They've released twenty-two (about half of their total) in fifteen fandoms so far.  One of them, "The Code of Friendship" by [info]foxy11814, is FK!  (My entry, "From Now On," as previously mentioned, was written for a BtVS request.)

With my co-moderator, I am planning to soon begin setting up that little FK-only event, with stories to be due May 18 (the LK anniversary).  I'm figuring we'll want about two months to write, so assignments would be distributed no later than March 23 (hopefully sooner), sign-ups due by March 18, sign-ups open on February 18.  Sound about right?

AtS/BtVS Fanfic by Me: "From Now On"

  • Aug. 19th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
The first ten stories in the [info]gen_ficathon queue have been released.  None are FK so far, but one happens to be my AtS/BtVS story "From Now On," starring Faith and Wesley, written to [info]tielan's prompt.  (Thanks to [info - personal] leela_cat and [info]much_madness for beta-reading!)

This is my second Buffyverse story.  My first was "Fortune Prove" (written for [info]femme_fic), and my third comes due on September 1 for [info]oldschoolfic.  It's a Buffyverse year!  :-)

Next year, we're having that FK event. ;-)

What You Guys Have Been Up To

  • Aug. 16th, 2009 at 9:49 AM
Okay, that's as caught up as I'm going to get!  :-)  Recently, in FK on my LJ Friends List and DW Equivalent:

Vids.
On 08/02, [info]abby82 shared her new FK vid "Vampire," which she describes as "copious amounts of big, scary vampire fangs" from throughout FK.

Memes.
On 08/07, [info]havocthecat played the Massive Top-5 Meme, and listed Janette as the second of her "Top 5 Bad Guys/Girls." And when [info]ithildyn played the same meme, she listed FK as the second of her "Top 5 Fandoms."

Cast and Crew.

  • On 08/02, [info]pj1228 recommended and reviewed Passage, a historical documentary featuring Nigel Bennett, filmed on location in London, the Orkney Islands and Nunavut.
  • On 07/19, [info]abby82 shared a photo-spread on John Kapelos's appearance on Lois and Clark.
  • On 07/01, [info]abby82 let us know that Jim Parriot's new show, Defying Gravity, airs on ABC this summer.  It stars Christina Cox, who starred in Lifetime's BloodTies, but is much more importantly known for her Joan of Arc in FK's "For I Have Sinned" and her traffic cop in FK's "Close Call." ;-)
  • On 06/28, [info]ithildyn posted a link to YouTube footage of the famous Green Eggs and Ham reading by Nigel Bennett and John Kapelos at Syndicon '97.  Natsuko Ohama is with them.  (I was actually at that con!  You will not be surprised that the "Unsuited" affiliation was invented following this event.)
  • On 06/26, [info]pj1228 let us know that Nick Knight has at last been released on DVD in Germany (titled Twilight Vampire Cop), and she reviewed all the interesting peculiarities of the voice-over casting as well as the titling.
  • On 06/03 (I missed it the first time around), [info]abby82 shared that Nigel Bennett is reportedly up for a lead in Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Ficathons.

  • On 07/19, both [info]amilyn and [info]abby82 clued us in to the [info]matrithon, a ficathon celebrating female characters 40+ years old (Janette is listed). Prompt claiming runs till 07/31. Art and vids as well as stories: stories must be at least 500 words. Posting 09/07-10/05.
  • On 07/15, both [info]havocthecat and [info]abby82 shared news of the First Annual Femslash Kink Meme (a Nanette prompt was submitted).

Fanfiction (including Fancomics).

Proposed: An FK-Only Fic Fest

  • Jul. 19th, 2009 at 5:46 PM
The prompts for the [info]oldschoolfic and [info]gen_ficathon events came through at the end of June.  While of course they're all very interesting and I'm doing my best to craft things to please my recipients, not one of the prompts I received -- 3 from one game, 4 from the other -- are FK.

I think that we should hold an FK-only ficathon/fest/game/event.  Not today, not tomorrow, but... in the not-too-distant future.  (Before Yuletide?  After?  Later in '10?)  It would doubtless be a very small game, but what I'm thinking is: if three of us played in an FK-only game, that would be three new FK stories, while when three of us play in a multi-fandom game, we're lucky to get even one new FK story.

This is not to say that I don't esteem multi-fandom games!  I love other fandoms, too.  (For example, is there anyone out there recommending HL gen? How about Duncan/Tessa? Pretty please?)  But like the bumper stickers say, I would rather be playing FK.

Here's the idea. What do you think? )

Gen-Ficathon Sign-Ups Extended

  • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
The [info]gen_ficathon moderator has temporarily reopened sign-ups, and asked participants to consider adding prompts and/or fandoms, hoping to ease matching.  She specifically calls out Forever Knight as a fandom needing more prompts (also HL, B5, LotR, ST:TOS, ST:TNG, SJA and a few more).

She would like to offer every writer two compatible prompts, which is generous, pragmatic -- and ambitious, perhaps?  I would like to help her matching, but of the neglected fandoms listed, my original requests covered three (probably meaning I'm part of the problem; darn) and I'm not familiar with most of the rest.  I'll keep thinking on it.

As we're talking ficathons, just a reminder that sign-ups for the next [info]oldschoolfic event come due June 30 (Tuesday).

FK is on Hulu

  • Jun. 22nd, 2009 at 1:08 AM
Everyone else knows this already, right?  Forever Knight is on Hulu, with seasons one and two up for free online viewing -- with commercials.  (To view without commercials, purchase episode downloads from Amazon for $1.99, or of course the DVDs.)

I pinged Hulu for the first time this weekend while signing up for the [info]oldschoolfic ficathon (sign up by June 30; this is the one for any genre, in out-of-production fandoms only).  My FK prompt references an episode, which should be easy, I thought.  Rewatch just one episode, and all set!  But what if my prompt recipient doesn't own the DVDs, or they're packed away, or something?  It seems Hulu will serve nicely.

I had already signed up for the [info]gen_ficathon event (sign up by June 25; this is the one for gen only, in any fandom), so now I'm conclusively in both FK-eligible events this summer.  In over my head?  We'll see. :-)

Ficathon Sign-Ups Continue

  • Jun. 16th, 2009 at 1:19 AM
So sign-ups continue at two upcoming FK-eligible ficathons: [info]gen_ficathon (sign-up deadline 25 June) and [info]oldschoolfic (sign-up deadline 30 June).  I've now signed up for one, and will sign up for the other in time.

Because the [info]gen_ficathon sign-ups are public, I can share a current FK-participation tally:

  • FK Prompts Submitted: 4 (here, here, here, and here)
  • FK Writers Offering: 5 (here, in addition to those above)

Because [info]oldschoolfic's sign-ups are screened, I can't do the same, but they have achieved at least one FK story in each of their previous events.

Stray thought:  You know what it seems as if no one requests?  Vachon's crew.  Surely someone should prompt for Urs, Screed, Bourbon and the wide-eyed guy with the hair...

FK-Eligible Summer Ficathons

  • Jun. 5th, 2009 at 11:37 PM
We have two (2) FK-eligible events this summer!  FK won a place among the official fandoms of the new [info]gen_ficathon, and of course FK is always eligible for [info]oldschoolfic, by definition.  Their timeframes overlap, but it's not impossible to participate in both.  I'm planning to give it a whirl.  I hope you will, too!  (I would enjoy receiving FK prompts to write. ~g~)  I have not yet signed up for either, but just because I need to plan and ponder my prompts.  (What makes a high-quality prompt?  Different things for different people, I'm sure.)

Gen Ficathon I OldSchoolFic IV
Fandoms:  Official Fandoms List   Any Out-of-Production Fandom
Posts: Rules and Sign-ups Rules and Sign-Ups
Sign-ups: June 04-25
Sign-ups are public.
June 03-30
Sign-ups are screened.
Assignments Sent: June 28 July 01
Deadline: August 11 September 01
Minimum Length: One/1000 words One/1000 words or
Two/500 words

[info]gen_ficathon is bright new.  [info]oldschoolfic, on the other hand, has held three events to date, and I've played them all ("A Delicate Balance" (FK), "Fearful Symmetry" (FK) and "So This is Home" (HL)) and found them quite satisfactory.  With two events so close together, I'm going to have to aim at shorter stories (as [info]much_madness is always telling me to).  Pity: I will get a whole week off work for the first time in over a year just before the assignments go out.  If only it were after!  :-)

[info]gen_ficathon Fandom Voting is Open

  • May. 31st, 2009 at 1:10 AM
Voting for the official [info]gen_ficathon fandoms is open, and will remain so through June 3.  A total of 92 fandoms were nominated!  The winners of this vote will become the list from which every participant must make minimum offers/requests (in addition to any wild cards) so that matching can work.  Fingers crossed for FK. :-)

Voters may name up to five fandoms.  Voters are requested to vote for only those fandoms they are most likely to write/request, and also to vote only if they plan to participate.  (I considered voting only for FK and HL, lest my votes push others ahead of my best beloved.  But on reflection, I went ahead and named the next three things on their list I believe I could write most credibly.  I may feel differently another day, but tonight those were list )).

A Gen Ficathon

  • May. 22nd, 2009 at 10:22 PM
I just discovered that a multifandom [info]gen_ficathon is coming our way!  Excellent.  With no animosity toward the infinite wonderful flavors of romance, I consider gen my natural habitat.

I nominated FK in their fandoms poll.  The next step, says their rules post, will be voting for the official fandoms May 27-June 3.  As is customary, participants must offer to write in a minimum number of designated fandoms for the game to be manageable.  FK will need to achieve "official" status on the ballot to make it likely we'll see FK written in this event.  They plan to send assignments on June 28, with a posting deadline of August 11.

(The moderator seems to be [info]paperflowered.  I'm not acquainted with her.  Are you?)

Addendum:  Shall I define "gen"?  It originally stood for "general."  The current usage seems to be that all fanfiction can be divided into gen or romance, and that romance can then be subdivided by the identities of the participants.  Both gen and romance may have any rating; it's a matter of subject, not severity.

Femme-Fic Ficathon 2009 Released

  • May. 20th, 2009 at 11:29 PM
The [info]femme_fic queue is released!  This is the "We Love Female Characters" ficathon, with a wide mix of fandoms and genres.  There are unfortunately no FK stories this time (only [info]falcon_horus and I submitted FK prompts), but there are over fifty stories celebrating female characters!  Take a glance at the catalogue post, and you're likely to see something in one of your fandoms.

I received a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Jenny Calendar prompt imagined by [info]havocthecat, and wrote "Fortune Prove" in response.  Of the prompts I submitted, [info]pervyficgirl picked my Marvel Comics Scarlet Witch prompt, and wrote "Magic Mirrors Looking at People Who Belong to Us," which indulges me by crawling into the canon space after issue #12 of the second V&SW limited series (which they should reissue now).

It will take me weeks to read my way through the ficathon, but I want to note up front that there are new stories by [info]havocthecat, [info]amilyn and [info]falcon_horus from my LJ F-List (did I miss anyone?), and that I had the privilege of beta-reading for [info]amilyn and [info]seshat_maat.  I'd also like to thank my own generous beta-readers: [info]amilyn, [info]batdina, [info]much_madness and [info]wiliqueen.

Back Here

  • May. 3rd, 2009 at 12:16 AM
I've spent all my hobby time for the past several weeks on my [info]femme_fic story.  One kind beta-reader has already looked at it and, because of the grace period, it will get another scrub.  Here's hoping it will be at least the sum of its parts.

It's not FK, which is why I haven't been posting.  (Well, that and life... you know the drill.)  I've written outside FK before, of course, but this is my first go at this particular fandom (BtVS), and it's also my longest story yet outside FK.  I noticed that given an FK prompt, I tend to rewatch one relevant episode many times, but given a non-FK prompt, I tend to try to review (literally, re-view) all remotely relevant canon.  I think perhaps I must adjust my scale the next time out, as [info]much_madness often tells me. :-)

This second [info]femme_fic event marks the first anniversary of my ficathon participation.  They're a lot like list challenges, but the exchange aspect and the deadline are key differences that really ramped up my production.  I just wish I had more hobby time to go around!

One Last Nudge

  • Feb. 28th, 2009 at 9:56 AM
Today, the last day of February, is the last day to sign up for the [info]femme_fic 2009 ficathon event (I've signed up) or to contribute to [info]falcon_horus's Fleur Mini-Ficathon (I'll post today).

An exchange-style ficathon can be a great opportunity to ask for a story that you've always wanted to read, but perhaps can't quite manage yourself; perhaps your ficathon match will have just the right background or inspiration to bring it to life!  ([info]butterflykiki wrote me an outstanding HL story starring Methos and Tessa in that line last year.)  Okay, okay, enough with the nudging... :-)

[info]femme_fic ficathon fandoms compiled

  • Feb. 21st, 2009 at 12:29 AM
Have you been waiting to see what's on offer before signing up for the [info]femme_fic ficathon?  (As a reminder, this is the multi-fandom story exchange starring female characters.)  We are now heading into the final week (sign-ups close February 28) and you can see all the requests and offers in detail on the sign-up post.  And you can see my own sign-up here, and [info]havocthecat's here, and [info]amilyn's here, and [info]falcon_horus's here... did I miss anyone on my f-list?

For your convenience, I've compiled the requests and offers.  Here are the fandoms in which people hope you are willing to write: List ).  And here are the fandoms in which people will be happy to write if you ask: List ).

Even if you're not playing yourself, consider perhaps passing on the link to the game?  Spread the news?  It looks like a nice line-up, but it could use a lot more Forever Knight! :-)  (Or, you know... how about HighlanderYoung Blades?)

What You Guys Have Been Up To

  • Feb. 8th, 2009 at 9:49 AM
(Aside: Is something weird with icons on LJ today?  My Schanke userpic is displaying as someone's fairy userpic.)

Recently, in FK on my LJ Friends List:

Ficathons
  • Celebrating Female Characters.  The [info]femme_fic ficathon, on 02/01, began accepting sign-ups.  They're unscreened this year, so take a look!  A wide variety of fandoms are offered.  Only one FK request is up so far, and while it's a very nice request, it would be outstanding if there were more.  (I'm hesitating over my sign-up because of Real Life obligations, or there would be two already.  But, you know, seduce me with more FK prompts and offers, right? ~g~)  Sign-ups are open through 02/28.
  • Celebrating Claire Rankin Characters[info]falcon_horus, from 01/23 through 01/28, collected prompts for her Claire Rankin-characters drabble-a-thon.  The prompts went up on 02/01, and there was a dash of conversation about Fleur and Natalie on 02/07.  All the drabbles posted so far are about Rankin's non-FK characters; I intend to produce at least one for Fleur.
  • Female Characters, and also NC-17[info]abby82, on 01/23, promoted two separate ficathon-style events, "Porn Battle VII" and [info]halfamoon, for which FK is eligible.  The [info]halfamoon community celebrates female characters, and their event runs 02/01-02/14.

Individuals
  • Icons[info]ithildyn, on 02/03, pointed us to her freshly updated icons-to-share page, which includes FK icons, among many others.
  • Meme.  The "extras to order" fanfiction meme drew FK responses from [info]hearts_blood here and from [info]amilyn here.  And [info]ithildyn here and [info]havocthecat here offered, but no one asked them about FK.
  • Actors[info]pj1228, on 01/30, reviewed Just Buried, newly released on DVD (Region 1 only), which co-stars Nigel Bennett.
  • Conventions.  Someone who posted under a lock on 01/29 announced the "Breakout Before Moonlight" con this summer in London, and noted that while it's mainly a Moonlight con, some longtime FK fans will be there.
  • Nostalgia.  Someone who posted under a lock reminisced on 01/28 about a wacky multi-fandom round-robin story (including FK) that we participated in long ago.  Thanks for the memories!
  • Wiki[info]susanmgarrett, on 01/19, mentioned that she has been putting story listings on the Forever Knight Wiki, and invited authors to drop by and list their stories, or clean up entries. Separately, apparently someone had mislisted her as a Perk. Egad.
  • Fiction and Actors[info]abby82, on 02/01, posted a new story, "Illusions of Mortality," written for, um, "Porn Battle VII."  On 01/21, she shared scads of GWD photos from American Psycho 2 (2002), which she says was an intentionally campy movie costarring William Shatner.  Ger plays a psychiatrist.

Two Ficathons

  • Feb. 1st, 2009 at 10:40 PM

The 2009 [info]femme_fic ficathon is now accepting sign-ups here.  (As a reminder, this event celebrates female characters, minimum 1K words, sign-ups throughout February.)  Voting determined that FK will be a wildcard fandom again this year, so participants will need to sign up for two of the voted-in fandoms in addition to FK (or, you know, some other fandom ~g~).  What's different this year is that the sign-ups are not screened, so you can look over what has been requested/offered, and perhaps even craft your entry to match.  This was a very good event last year.

And the Claire Rankin-character Drabble-a-thon (hereinafter the Fleur Mini-Ficathon) is now open here.  Submissions are accepted throughout February (no claiming, no limits).  Some new Fleur stories would be cool (but of course her Atlantis and Voyager characters are also eligible).  Thanks to everyone who submitted Fleur prompts!  For your convenience, I'm sharing them here:  prompt list )  And thanks to [info]falcon_horus, for having the idea, and hosting!

[info]femme_fic 2009 Ficathon

  • Jan. 27th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
[info]femme_fic is holding a 2009 ficathon (exchange style, 1000+ words).  As you may remember, this multi-fandom fanfiction community focuses on female characters.  They are polling for which fandoms to include this round.  Please consider participating in the ficathon -- and of course in FK in particular!  We have many marvelous female characters, both recurring and guest, who merit starring roles and fresh angles.

Natalie, Janette, Tracy, Cohen... Urs, Grace, Norma, Alma, Brianna, Fleur, Divia... Myra, Jenny, Sara, Amy, Cynthia... Erica, Emily, Marian, Mai, Alyssa, Sylvaine, Lisa, Tawny, Sofia, Alexandra, Alix, Catherine, Angel, Gwyneth, Serena, Amalia, Ellen/Monica/Jacqueline, Rebecca, Denise, Bernice, Bridgette, Francesca... Barbara, Jody...

Here's an abbreviated event timeline:
  • Sign Ups: Through February
  • Assignments Out: Early March
  • Stories Due: Early May

In the 2008 [info]femme_fic event -- my first ficathon -- I wrote "Starwort" (FK) for a request by [info]falcon_horus, and [info]havocthecat wrote "Three Months Out, Six to Go" (BtVS) for a request by me.  This was great, but because FK was a wildcard fandom last year, there was relatively little of it to go around.  To increase the likelihood of FK stories for us all, please be sure to vote for FK now if you'll be willing to write it.  And request it when you sign up!
