FK Fanfic: "In a Family Way"

This is the story I contributed to the December 2009 oldschoolfic ficathon.  My thanks to [personal profile] merfilly for her prompt of "Nick and Lacroix, Family Bonding," and to [personal profile] batdina, amilyn, [personal profile] leela_cat and much_madness for beta-reading and discussion.  This prompt nudged me to reacquaint myself with some episodes I rarely watch, and revisit some themes I hadn't touched in years.

  •   Title: "In a Family Way" (also on AO3)
  •   Length: ~7,700 words
  •   Date: Posted to FKFic-L January 30, 2010

  •   Summary: Nick makes friends on a flight to Paris to see Janette, but Lacroix is on the same plane.
  •   Setting:   December 2009
  •   Characters:   Nick, Lacroix, Janette, Others
  •   Quotation: "Your denial of the natural law does not alter it, Nicholas." / "Your rejection of hope does not defeat it, Lacroix."

I'm consistently in awe of your ability to adapt them to how much the world has changed since the show ended, in a way that's so seamless and organic.

That's what stood out to me first, but the painting of the connections is even more impressive. This story centers so much on the intangibles between them, but there's never any doubt exactly where we are and what's happening.

And your weaving in of canon details is, as always, impeccable. I love that you can elide vexing continuity artifacts with a side comment, and appreciate the work that goes into making that possible.

Over and above all that, it's just a wonderful read.

Thank you! You're very kind. Your lovely, positive, specific feedback is encouraging. I appreciate it!

Pay no attention to the vampire in the flashback... ;-) Thank you. I try not to let the intricate canon allusions get out of hand, but they're so much a part of the fun, bridging the gaps and merging the overlaps. Here, I got to play with both the sipping tangle and the method-of-conversion tangle, plus HF and LK lurking around the edges.

Thank you very much. I worried whether the light plot would have enough momentum to keep the reflections from bogging down.

Thank you for reading the story, and for letting me know you did!

I enjoyed reading your story. It was an interesting experience to read the plot transferred into present time.
I loved the way Lacroix takes possession of the seat beside Nicholas. ;)

Thank you! I appreciate that you read it, and let me know. It might be interesting to see what you would have done with that prompt; in many ways, it's more in line with your usual work than mine.

>"It was an interesting experience to read the plot transferred into present time."

Lacroix assaulting friends of Nick's (for sharing Nick's attention and affection) is such a common element that I thought it might be almost too obvious, but I hoped that the Janette content would make it worth the readers' time. The more things change, the more they stay the same. :-)

Again, thanks!
