oldschoolfic back-to-school ficathon prompts up
The oldschoolfic back-to-school ficathon prompts are now available for claiming, and there were 15 Forever Knight prompts to start.  To review, the game is to pick a prompt, write a story (500 words or more), and post it to the community by September 30, and yep, you don't need to have submitted a prompt in order to claim one.

It turns out that I was the only one to submit FK prompts.  Sorry.  It looks like I must pick one of my own if I want to play.  But you guys go first, okay?  If you want one, snag it!

Oh darn it! I kept meaning to post prompts and it completely passed me by. However you certainly did a great job of representing FK. I tip my hat to you, especially for the "Spin Doctor" Nick prompt. It's right in line with a prompt I wanted to post.

I'm gonna take your Cohen prompt for a spin. 500 words by September 30th shouldn't be too hard, right, lol. ::kicks my lazy muse::

Oh, this was great news! I'm delighted that you will be playing. And thank you for the compliment on the prompts.

>"It's right in line with a prompt I wanted to post."

This is excellent, too. Your remark moved me to go claim the "Spin Doctor" prompt, because this makes it feel more like I'm writing for a concept someone else might like to read, and not only for a prompt I gave myself (which is okay, but just a different dynamic).

Might you share what you had in mind? You don't have to! I was thinking that if they were compatible, I might merge them...

I hope the Captain Cohen prompt works for you! (Now, I did see you post a Masters of the Universe thing, recently, right?)

It wasn't really anything definite but more of a concept about Nick that's always appealed to me. I always appreciated that Nick took the initiative to educate himself. A formal classroom setting may have been a bit difficult but not entirely impossible in some variation with the availability of independent study and night classes. As a vampire with the entire world at his fingertips Nick could have very easily chosen to utilize the school of life rather than a structured academic setting but he didn't. Heck even by choosing law enforcement as a way of giving back he had to pursue formal training at an academy. To me that really emphasizes Nick's desire to learn and grow as an individual.

I've always seen Nick as naturally curious. Now sometimes I unintentionally blur the line between canon and fanon but to me the young, mortal and idealistic Nick from the "Queen of Harps" flashback was someone who yearned for more. He wanted to know what was beyond the boundaries of his home. Schooling in the 13th century may not have been exactly what he had in mind but his status as a minor noble would have given him the opportunity to learn to read and write. That's a solid foundation for him in that even then he'd be exposed to schools of thought different from his own.

Nick's penchant to decorating the loft with historical artifacts tells me that his love of learning wasn't just a phase and a convenient tool to uncovering a way back to mortality. He takes a certain delight in it and the opportunity to teach and share what he knows with young people is completely in line with who Nick is.

Coincidently, in Diane Trap's "LaCroix Takes the Wheel", which I love, Nick references a decision to go back to school and study ancient history. The entire story is fantastic but that little nugget has been all I've had to hold on to when it comes to Scholar!Nick.

I hope the Captain Cohen prompt works for you!

I hope so too! I sometimes find it easier to fill in the blanks in cases that are still up for grabs. Other than Kathy Whelton's "Making Amends" I really haven't seen much fic that centers on Cohen so I think this'll be a nice opportunity.

I'm playing catch up on LJ with that one. It's the first thing I ever posted online fic wise, and it definitely shows at times, but it's also my big fic project. I've been working on it since 2005. It's still a major work in progress for me though.

>"Scholar!Nick."

Hopefully, my ficathon story will be one to add to this collection. ~fingers crossed~ Thank you for sharing your thoughts on that; it helped me think of the prompt as hot just one I'd generated myself.

There's very, very little, and Kathy W.'s "Making Amends" is good. I seem to recall that Lisa McD. once wrote a vignette about Cohen, but those are the only two that pop to mind!
